For What It’s Worth

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

It’s one week before election day, and it is time to reveal my endorsements for the various offices.  I know that no one really gives a flying fig about what I think, and my thought will have no bearing on the outcome, but for posterity’s sake, here are my opinions.

For every Nowata County office, I am supporting the Republican, and given that I am a registered Democrat, that speaks volumes.  Here is why — the Democrats have run this county for decades, and yet the county keeps sliding further and further into the abyss of irrelevance.  I have heard zero, zero, fresh ideas from the Democrats, who seem to be in it for themselves rather than for the people.  It’s time for them to go.

State House — I was disappointed in Steve Martin for voting for the $30 million “gift” from the state to the Oklahoma City Thunder.  It’s bad for the state, it’s bad for the district.  While Steve explained why he voted for it, and I understand why he did, and completely agree with his logic, I am still not happy about it on principle.  Enough said.  Both Steve and Eric Epperson are likeable enough.  Both have a “share-the-wealth” plan to bring more sales tax revenue to economically distressed rural cities and counties.  Steve’s plan is to set aside one percent of sales tax revenue, pool it, and distribute it based on population.   Eric’s plan is to have your sales tax follow you wherever you go, and when you make a purchase in another city, you give your home zip code information and that sales tax follows you home.  Both plans are socialistic in that they reward the laziness of those governments that won’t work hard to attract new business and penalize those that do, but the breadth and scope of Eric’s plan is Obama-esque in its “share the wealth” mantra. Why should industrious cities like Bartlesville or Owasso that spent a great deal of time, effort, and taxpayer dollars have the rewards of those efforts, sales tax revenue, be penalized because cities like Nowata do not want to make the commitment to bring businesses to their cities?  Bartlesville spent a lot of its taxpayer dollars bringing in Wal-Mart, Lowes, the mall, etc., to become a regional shopping hub.  Why should it be robbed because Nowata didn’t?  If Nowata doesn’t want to see it’s dollars go elsewhere, it needs to get off its duff and become a business friendly city and attract its own businesses.  If it doesn’t have enough money to fund its municipal operations, then perhaps it should disincorporate and not be a city anymore.  Epperson’s plan is not only wrong, it is impractical and downright nosy, requiring shoppers to divulge personal information to ensure that the sales tax can find its way home.  Since I am not a socialist, I cannot support a candidate who advocates socialism.

On to the federal level—

Dan Boren seems to be doing a good job.  John Sullivan isn’t the best, but once again, the Democrats are running a very bad candidate.  While I don’t particularly care for Jim Inhofe, he is better than the alternative, Andrew Rice.

Last but not least, here’s hoping that the polls are wrong, and that John McCain is elected the 44th President of the United States.  Heaven help us if we are saddled with four years of Obama socialism.

A timely and important new “The Fine Print”.  It may change your vote!

Another Heartbreak

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

It’s very hard to be a Missouri Tiger football fan.  Every time that the Tigers seem to be joining the ranks of the elite, they get a big huge fat head and choke.  Watching them lose to Oklahoma State at home made me want to cry.  Yes, Oklahoma State did play a heckuva game, but still, you are not supposed to lose at home to a lesser ranked team.  Now it’s just a matter of hoping that they don’t go into their usual October funk, blow the season, and end up in some low level bowl, if they go to a bowl at all.

A Very Cold Drive

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Meanwhile, while the Dodge was inoperable, I drove the Sable, the car with barely a breath of heat.  Since the temperatures are kind of nippy, it was a very cool drive to Tulsa.  I am afraid being exposed to the cold for that long may be a reason why I am feeling a bit under the weather today.  (Of course, standing on a roof in the rain yesterday didn’t help….)

Another Victim Of Bad Roads

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

My brakes seized up on Sunday, making my beloved Dodge inoperable.  All of the dirt and dust and wear and tear impaired the ability of the brakes to operate properly, eventually causing them to cease operating all together.  $350 later, I now have my car back and operational.  I am so ready to move…..

Call Me Vanilla

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

I have decided that I have been trying too hard to impress other people and have been coming across as something less than authentic. The western-style hat that I was wearing in the summer is one of those things that pops to mind.  So, I have decided that Michael must be Michael, as plain and ordinary and vanilla as he is, because that is who I am, and who I need to be.  Besides, would you really want me any other way?

Forget-Me-Not

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

I find it absolutely amazing that some people have the ability to keep track of appointments in their head.  I, unfortunately, do not.  For the second time in as many weeks, I forgot about a neighborhood meeting for which I did not have written confirmation.

After a lengthy deposition Monday, I returned to my office to relax for a few, only to listen to my voice mail messages and be horrified — I was supposed to be at a meeting that I had forgotten about.  One of the messages was from a neighborhood giving me a gentle reminder that I was supposed to be at their meeting across town at 630 — and it was 625!  Luckily for me, they had other business, and were still on that other business when i arrived at 645.

Meanwhile, Back In Nowata County….

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that the roads in Nowata County have gotten a lot lot worse of late.  My cars are making noises that they never made before due to the daily pounding that they are taking…

While I will miss a lot of things about Nowata County, like being able to see the Tulsa skyline from the ridge on Rd 407 on a clear October morning like this morning (how cool is that?), I will not miss the very bad roads…..

Wazzup, Washington County?

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

It’s been a busy several weeks for me, which is why I haven’t been able to post.  I have moved back into an office at the city (YEAH!) after five months in my “temporary” quarters in the break room, and I still haven’t unpacked all my boxes.  (It’s been over a week now….)  I went to a conference a few weeks back and met the two Washington County Commissioners not named Dunlap.  I know it was only a one day meeting, but I came back with a favorable impression.  Good job, Washington County…

Speaking of Washington County, I will be moving there before the end of the month.  My children are transfers into the Bartlesville School District, and the problem with being a transfer is that they can always have their transfer status revoked, which is exactly what happened to two of my boys, who are now in private school.  I was going to buy a place right outside town in Osage County, but as I found out just days before closing, it was not in the Bartlesville School District, not even close.  Oops!  But, I guess it all works out in the end, because now I will be living in a cool historic house with character smack dab in the middle of town, and we will be able to walk, yes, you heard me, walk, to school, church, the convenience store, the tire store, extracurricular activities, saving me a bundle on gas and wear and tear.  How cool is that?

The Signs Are Back!

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Finally!  I am starting to see candidates signs sprouting up in Nowata County.  I thought we had been forgotten!

Visually, it looks like Eric Epperson is in the lead.  I see his signs just about every road I drive.  I’ve seen a few Steve Martin signs.  I’ve seen McCain signs, but few Obama ones.  Interestingly, the Nowata County Democrats seem to be on the ball, because I’ve seen many more of their signs (Hallett – Jackson – Bridges) than their Republican counterparts.  I’ve seen less than ten signs for all three Republican county candidates (Sheriff – County Commissioner – County Clerk).  Are the Republicans conceding?
